Sneezing My Way Through Spring: A Love Story (With Betrayal)

One minute you’re living your best life and the next—wham! You’re up to your nostrils in sneezes, snot, itchy eyes and all levels of hell.

It happens every single year. Every. Single. Year. You’d think by now my immune system would have had a stern word with itself, looked in the mirror, and said, “Right, we’ve been through this before. Pollen is not the enemy. Stand down.” But no. My body, bless its dramatic little heart, insists on treating spring like a full-scale biological attack.

Spring: My Favourite Season and My Greatest Nemesis

Here’s the thing—and I mean this with every fibre of my congested, watery-eyed being—spring is still my absolute favourite season of the year. The flowers! The longer days! That particular quality of golden afternoon light that makes everything look like a slow-motion shampoo commercial! I genuinely adore all of it.

I just wish seasonal allergies would, with the greatest of respect, exit stage left. Take a left at Albuquerque. Keep going. Don’t call. Don’t write. Leave no forwarding address.

Because what a cruel joke it is, isn’t it? Spring arrives—the season of renewal, of optimism, of actual warmth after approximately four hundred years of winter—and your body decides this is the moment to fall spectacularly apart. The birds are singing! The blossom is blooming! And I am standing in my garden in sunglasses and a scarf, clutching a family-sized box of tissues like it’s a life preserver, sneezing so hard I momentarily leave my own body. (Well, I would be .. If I had a garden… humour me)

The Many Glamorous Symptoms Nobody Warned You About

Let’s talk about the full allergy experience for a moment, because I feel it deserves proper documentation.

First, there are the eyes. Oh, the eyes. They itch in a way that no amount of rubbing will satisfy—in fact, rubbing makes everything considerably worse, but try telling your hands that at two in the afternoon when you’re sat in a meeting looking like you’ve just watched the end of Marley & Me for the fifteenth time. “Are you crying?” No, Karen. I am simply existing in spring.

Then there’s the nose. The relentlessly, heroically productive nose. It operates at peak capacity roughly twenty-four hours a day from March through to whenever the universe decides it’s had enough fun at my expense—usually sometime in June, after it’s thoroughly enjoyed itself.

And the sneezing. Good grief, the sneezing. I don’t do polite little achoos. I sneeze like I’m trying to expel a small appliance. People in neighbouring postcodes have been known to look up. I once sneezed so suddenly whilst carrying a cup of tea that I redecorated part of my kitchen. I considered billing the pollen.

The Things We Tell Ourselves to Cope

Every year, I tell myself it won’t be as bad this time. Every year, I am wrong. I have tried all manner of coping strategies—different timings for going outside, keeping windows closed on high-pollen days, wearing sunglasses the approximate size of satellite dishes. I’ve googled “why is my body like this” more times than I care to admit.

I’m not here to dish out medical advice—I’m a blogger, not a doctor, and I wouldn’t trust myself to prescribe a plaster without a second opinion. If your allergies are making your life a misery (and honestly, they are very good at that), please do talk to a pharmacist or your GP about what options might work for you. They have actual qualifications and everything. It’s marvellous.

What I can tell you is that there is a particular solidarity among allergy sufferers. We recognise each other in the wild. A shared glance across a park—puffy-eyed, tissues at the ready—says more than words ever could. It says: I see you. I am also suffering. Isn’t the blossom beautiful though?

And Yet. And Yet.

Here’s where I land on all of this, after years of sneezing my way through March, April, May, and occasionally a rogue fortnight of June: I would not trade spring for anything.

I would trade the allergies in an absolute heartbeat—packed off in a suitcase, sent on a one-way ticket to somewhere far away where they can bother nobody and cause only mild inconvenience to a cactus. But the season itself? No. Spring gets to stay.

Because despite the sneezing and the itching and the eyes that look like I’ve been awake since approximately 2003, there is still nothing quite like that first proper warm day of the year. The one where you step outside and think—oh, there it is. The world remembered how to do this. The light is back. The colour is back. Everything smells like possibility (and, if I’m being honest, quite a lot of pollen).

So here I am, tissues stuffed in every pocket, antihistamines doing their level best, sunglasses on indoors like a minor celebrity, absolutely refusing to let my immune system’s questionable decision-making ruin my favourite season.

Spring, I love you. You know I love you. But allergies—if you’re reading this—kindly take a left at Albuquerque and keep driving. We’re done here.

Are you a fellow allergy sufferer? Tell me your coping strategies—or your most dramatic sneeze story—in the comments. We’re all friends here. Puffy-eyed, slightly crusty, absolute friends.
